As this last week wraps up and I look back on the semester, I reflect on everything that has happened. From the countless emails sent, press release searches, and volunteer hours done, I am very thankful for the experience. This last week is marked by the resumption, and presentation of my research on House Bill 85, Swimming Lesson Voucher Program, championed by none other than Representative Dr. Anna V. Eskamani. Florida unfortunately has high amounts of child drowning deaths every year, this bill aims to try and curb the amount. This bill particularly can help children with autism and extends the age range of the already existing swim voucher program. The sponsors and co-sponsers of the bill are as follows: Kendal, Eskamani, Daley; Gossett- Seidman; Harris; Hunschofsky; Lopez, J; Maggard; Partington. The bill aims to increase water safety by offering vouchers at no cost for families that are living off an income that places them at more than 200% of the federal line of poverty, while having children between 1 and 7. There will be a method for the public to apply to the vouchers with an authentication process. This bill received no nay votes, and all yes’ with a few missed votes, so it boasts general bi-partisan support, a hallmark of the reps’ hard work to unite and not divide. Representative Rosenwald said he is “happy to support again”. Dylan Cortez, Vice President of Operations for YMCA Florida First Coast said he is “In support of collectively serving hundreds and thousands of families and kids across our great state here in Florida”. As previously mentioned the bill does not bring with it much controversy as it is about the topic of child drowning that is universally important for any political party. Across the aisle, representatives support this bill. Supporters show overwhelming approval, speaking about how necessary it is to expand this program in this state which can potentially save many more children’s lives from drowning. The bill has passed, and has been in effect since July 1st, 2026. I will continue to work with the campaign side of things from here on out, fully gearing towards the mayoral race in aims to elect the Rep as the new mayor of the city of Orlando in November of 2027. We still have a long way to go… this is not the end! Thank you Dr. French for these past two semesters.
